These are mostly "winged" bowls, which begin as a square, rectangle, or totally odd shape, part of which is not turned round, but left in its original shape.

First the piece is shaped from the bottom and a tenon is formed. Then the piece is turned and held in a chuck by the bottom tenon while the top is formed and the bowl hollowed. The “wing” is left untouched from both sides.

In that way, it leaves a more sculptural surface allowing the grain of the wood to move about many more twists and turns... or offering additional space for carving, painting or otherwise playing.

When a flaw happens within a piece, it's an opportunity to make something different or to make the flaw a primary feature

All finishes used are food safe. I do not recommend them for serving wet and acidic foods, but do use them for serving bread, crackers, popcorn, nuts, chips, and the like, with a light washing after.
